Edema Socks - What are they?
Saturday, May 24th, 2008Edema socks are very similar to diabetic socks. So what does this mean?
Edema, formerly known as dropsy or hydropsy, is the increase of interstitial fluid in any organ — swelling. Generally, the amount of interstitial fluid is determined by the balance of fluid homeostasis, and increased secretion of fluid into the interstitium or impaired removal of this fluid may cause edema.
Diabetes mellitus, often referred to simply as diabetes, is a syndrome characterized by disordered metabolism and abnormally high blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) resulting from insufficient levels of the hormone insulin. The characteristic symptoms are excessive urine production (polyuria) due to high blood glucose levels, excessive thirst and increased fluid intake (polydipsia) attempting to compensate for increased urination, blurred vision due to high blood glucose effects on the eye’s optics, unexplained weight loss, and lethargy.
Both of these diseases require a loose top sock that doesn’t prohibit proper blood circulation. So although diabetic socks and edema socks may have different names - they can both serve the same purpose.
